Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have any concerns about building a log house?
We’ve compiled a list of the most common questions about the
design, delivery, materials and construction process of log houses.
Does Mammuttihirsi build log houses based on the customer’s own plans?
Yes. We are happy to build a log house tailored to our customers’ needs and preferences. The design can be a rough sketch of the floor plan drawn by the customer themselves, or even fully drawn-up architectural plans.
How can you build a log house on a budget?
The costs are largely determined before construction begins, so it is a good idea to consider your own needs and preferences carefully. The surest way to build a log house cost-effectively is to choose one from Mammuttihirre’s range of log house designs.
The house designs are cost-effective and the scope of the delivery is well thought out. The architectural and structural plans, as well as the production plans for the house designs, are already complete, and their costs do not need to be included in the price. Furthermore, the contents of the house kit and the scope of installation can be tailored so that the amount of work required of the customer is to their satisfaction.
Mammutti sales staff will help you find a well-designed, functional and cost-effective log house.
Why is it worth visiting completed log house projects before planning your own home?
Visiting a log house that is either complete or under construction helps you to visualise the design much better than you can from photographs or drawings alone.
When you visit the site, you’ll be able to see the actual size of the windows, the ceiling heights, the proportions of the rooms, the views and the effect of natural light in the various rooms. Site visits also offer the chance to assess the practicality of the floor plans and gather ideas for your own home.
Many builders find that they get their best ideas precisely by visiting house shows and completed projects.
Does Mammut offer a ‘turnkey’ delivery service?
No, we don’t; we specialise in supplying house kits. Our main products are the so-called Mammut Kit and the Mammut Installation Service. Our sales team will be happy to tell you more about our options.
Is it healthier to live in a log house?
Yes. Log houses have good, clean indoor air, which is why they are a pleasant place to be and breathe in. Log houses regulate temperature and humidity more effectively, which can help alleviate the symptoms of people with asthma and allergies.
What does it mean when people say a log building ‘breathes’?
The breathability of a structure refers to the ability of solid timber to regulate the temperature and humidity of the indoor air. The timber both absorbs and releases heat and humidity, maintaining a good and comfortable indoor climate.
Which is better for a log house – pine or spruce logs?
Both types of timber are suitable for log houses. The use of spruce in laminated log houses is becoming increasingly popular because spruce is lighter in colour, has a more uniform colour, has fewer knots, and its interior surfaces do not darken as much as those of pine logs. Mammuttihirsi supplies log houses made exclusively from spruce.
What is a non-settling log?
A log building made from non-shrinking logs does not settle after installation. In non-shrinking laminated logs, some of the log lamellae are glued together vertically, which minimises shrinkage caused by drying. Non-settling logs are often used in multi-storey and architecturally complex buildings.
How much does a log building settle?
Settlement depends on the type of log selected. Traditional laminated logs settle by approximately 1 cm per metre of height, and this is taken into account in structural design. Non-settling laminated logs, as the name suggests, do not settle.
Does Mammutti also sell smaller garden buildings?
Ancillary buildings can also be supplied to complement the main building. This allows the customer to maintain a consistent appearance for the buildings within the grounds.
